Laminate Flooring
Laminate flooring is a highly durable flooring solution that stands up exceptionally well to heavy foot traffic, making it ideal for busy households and commercial spaces alike. It provides a comfortable feel underfoot, is hygienic enough for use in bedrooms, and offers excellent noise reduction, which is particularly beneficial for homes with children, pets, or for rental property owners who need a practical yet stylish option. Over the years, laminate flooring has seen continuous innovation, with a variety of thicknesses and durability levels available, alongside advances in underlay technology. These improvements have helped laminate planks become one of the most popular flooring products worldwide. Recent developments in waterproof technology have further enhanced its durability, making it more resilient against spills and moisture. In addition to its robustness, laminate flooring is also a more affordable choice compared to many other flooring types and is known for being easy to install and maintain. At Riva Tiles & Bathrooms, we stock a range of high-quality laminate wood floors in 8mm, 10mm, and 12mm thick, each with excellent durability ratings. The durability is rated in AC3, AC4, AC5 and AC6. The AC3 rating is rarely used anymore but can be still found in some cheaper product, AC4 is considered a good Quality Domestic product and AC5 is considered a good Quality Commercial product with AC6 being best in Class. There are different warranties based on the manufacturers but usually the higher the AC rating the higher the warranty.

Vinyl flooring (SPC flooring)
SPC flooring is essentially a modern reinvention of an older, established product and has grown tremendously in popularity over the past few years. Its installation method closely resembles that of laminate flooring, and you’ll often find that most professional fitters who install SPC flooring are also experienced in fitting laminate floors. One of the convenient features of SPC flooring is that it comes preinstalled with an underlay, making it a very thin and low-profile option, especially useful in retrofit flooring projects where height restrictions may apply. Although the floor itself requires a level, stable subfloor beneath it, your flooring installer will evaluate and advise you on the condition of your existing floor to ensure the best result.
SPC (Stone Polymer Composite) flooring is known for being a highly durable, rigid, and completely waterproof type of resilient flooring, designed to withstand everyday wear and tear effectively. This makes SPC flooring particularly ideal for busy areas and rooms that are prone to moisture, such as kitchens, bathrooms, and utility rooms. In these spaces, it’s crucial to maintain both the floor’s appearance and its practical functionality over time.
Key Benefits:
Durable: SPC flooring is highly resistant to dents, scratches, and impacts, helping it maintain an attractive look even in high-traffic areas and environments with heavy use.
Waterproof: The core composition of SPC flooring is entirely waterproof, which makes it an excellent choice for wet areas where traditional flooring materials might otherwise be damaged by moisture.
Easy to Install: SPC boards feature a convenient and user-friendly click-lock system, which allows for quick and hassle-free installation without the need for glue or specialized tools.
Eco-Friendly: SPC flooring is mainly manufactured using recycled materials, making it an environmentally responsible flooring choice for your home or commercial space.

Tiles or Timber flooring, which should I use?
As always, this question tends to create a lot of debate and discussion among homeowners and experts alike. In reality, there is no single right answer—only the solution that works best for you and the specific needs of your home. When choosing between these products, there are several important factors to consider. How do you live in your home daily? What type of heating system do you currently use or plan to install? What level of insulation does your property have? Consider also your family makeup—do you have young children, elderly family members, or pets sharing the space with you? What design preferences are you aiming for, and do those preferences change depending on the room in question? Additionally, what budget are you working within? All these questions and more need careful consideration, and different factors may carry more weight depending on your individual circumstances. In short, there are no perfect answers, and ultimately the decisions are yours to make. However, we always advise people to follow their heart while also listening to their practical side—a balance of both usually leads to the best results. To provide some context, we’ll share a few key points and honest insights about each product’s strengths in various areas.
Laminate timber flooring has greatly improved in quality over the last few years, making it a highly popular and practical choice for many different types of buildings and rooms. It is now by far the leading option for various spaces, especially bedrooms, where it is often preferred because it is much easier to keep clean and maintain hygienic compared to carpets. Additionally, laminate flooring is widely used in rental properties and older housing stock, particularly in living and dining areas, due to its durability and affordability. The introduction of waterproof ranges has further enhanced the versatility of laminate flooring, allowing it to be installed in areas such as hallways and entrances, which frequently experience moisture due to the often wet Irish climate. There is also a wide variety of colours, styles, and finishes available, making laminate flooring a perfect and cost-effective solution for homeowners and landlords alike.
Hardwood engineered flooring is indeed a highly beautiful product, offering a timeless appeal that can enhance the atmosphere of any home. Depending on your budget, it can be used throughout various areas of your living space, adding warmth and character to each environment. The flooring itself is hardwearing and durable, capable of being sanded and refinished multiple times over many years of use, which makes it a truly long-lasting investment. As a natural product, every plank has unique variations, so the patterns are never repetitive. The colours will subtly change and grow familiar to you, becoming a cherished part of your home over time. This type of flooring is widely used in functional rooms such as large dining areas and sitting rooms, where it provides both elegance and practicality. It remains a product that few people ever grow tired of. However, it is on the more expensive side, so depending on how your budget is allocated, it may not be the right choice for everyone. Additionally, with the increasing popularity of underfloor heating in many modern homes, hardwood engineered flooring is becoming less common, as other flooring options often work better with heating systems.
Vinyl flooring is a relatively new product on the market and is regarded as highly environmentally friendly due to its low environmental impact during production and use. It works exceptionally well with underfloor heating systems, making it a practical choice for modern homes. Additionally, vinyl flooring is easy to clean and offers excellent slip resistance, which makes it an ideal option for a wide variety of both new and older residential properties. Like all products, it has its advantages and disadvantages. Since vinyl flooring is still relatively new, its long-term durability and longevity have not yet been fully established through extensive use. One important consideration is that it requires a very level subfloor because of its nature. However, the installation process is typically quick and straightforward. Although the available range of colours and styles is still somewhat limited compared to laminate flooring, this variety is steadily expanding to offer more options for homeowners.
Tiles are, of course, another excellent option and often spark varying opinions depending on who you speak to. By their very nature, tiles are incredibly hard-wearing and durable. Depending on the style and material you choose, they can definitely last a lifetime with proper care. For the most part, people don’t wear out tiles through everyday use; they usually replace them only when they want a fresh new look or a change in style. Much like laminate flooring, tile designs are evolving regularly, with new and classic styles being launched every year. Advances in machinery and printing technology also mean that tile manufacturing becomes more sophisticated annually. Similar to vinyl, tiles are considered a very environmentally friendly product. They often use local materials such as sands and clay and are primarily supplied from nearby countries like Spain and Italy, which helps reduce transportation emissions. The variety available is impressive, ranging from wood effects, marble looks, stone, concrete finishes, and intricate patterns, with countless combinations in between. These tiles are diverse and can vary in finish quality and design, but we have carefully sourced some of the finest options for you to choose from. They perform exceptionally well with underfloor heating systems due to their very low thermal resistance, meaning they transfer heat efficiently. This was also evident in older uninsulated homes, where tiles helped keep floors cool in the summer heat.
